How Closet Inventions Have Improved

Nearly every household has a closet, and these days owning a closet is no more extraordinary than having a kitchen sink. But if you were to really look at closets of the past, you would really take a more appreciative look at your own closet. How closet inventions have improved over the last several decades is truly remarkable, and you likely benefit from one such invention yourself.  Even the most simple of innovations has changed the way people view their closets and how these closets are changing the way people live in comfort.

One would not think of lighting as a major closet invention, but recessed lighting indeed changes the way people view their closet arrangement. These days, squinting into a dark, cramped space full of clothes is a thing of the past. Closets now come with lighting that can be adjusted to suit the eyes of the seeker, which is a crafty little invention we can all appreciate.

What about pull-out drawers and rotating shoe racks? Gone are the days of straining your back to reach your favorite pair of shoes. Today, not only are your clothes displayed for easy reaching, but set up just like a department store display. In fact, many closets are designed with clothing store layouts as inspiration! You wouldn't think this was such a great invention until you have a closet that displays your finest clothing yourself. Many closets even come with desk and shelf space so you can have a bookshelf and laptop table that's discreetly hidden from the rest of the room, creating even more space in the bedroom.

Closets are much larger than they used to be as well. Remember when a closet was that tiny little block of space dedicated to shirts that couldn't fold? Today, closets can be as large as a bedroom, with folding doors and all the luxury of a master bathroom. Closet inventions have improved mostly of in the architecture and design of the closets themselves. By today's standards, those tiny closets we used to call luxurious are no more than meager shoe space.

Closets are the little inventions of the home that silently re-create themselves over the years in their own quirky ways. If you were to look inside your own closet, you would see for yourself the minor improvements that show that closet inventions have clearly made a statement along the way. Many closets even resemble studio apartments in a lot of ways, and even the most basic of closet space is giant compared to the closets of our grandmothers. Gone are the days of fold-out ironing boards, replaced by the rotating shoe rack. Closets may not become the fanciest of all household inventions, but when you look at the way closets have changed for the better, even the most basic of closets cannot be denied the credit they are due. After all, closets today are not just places to store clothes.  They are modern storage units for our everyday lives.
